Lucy mothering one of Clean Slate's many fosters, Baby Bella

February 20, 2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved bull-dog/sharpei mix Miss Lucy, who passed peacefully this morning at 4a.m. During the first years of her life, Lucy was a posterchild for the cruelty of the backyard breeding industry. For five years, she was either pregnant or raising babies for breeders in California; when she was no longer deemed a viable breeder, she was thrown out of a moving car outside a Humane Society in Pinole, CA (her former owners were caught shortly thereafter, which is how we know her story).

For the last three years of her life, Miss Lucy was the grande dame at Clean Slate. She was cared for by the Clean Slate executive director's 84-year-old father, and lived happily by his side for her time here. Whether wobbling after resident pups, grumbling at the other dogs, or rolling around happily on the living room carpet, Lucy was living proof that anyone can get a second chance. She was also a perfect example of the value of rescuing a senior pet. Here at Clean Slate, we are committed to giving everyone -- puppies, mid-lifers, and seniors -- a second chance for life and love. In honor of Lucy's endless contributions to our organization, we are starting a program dedicated to educating people about how to effectively rescue and care for senior pets, and will continue our own work providing sanctuary for seniors like our beloved Miss Lucy.
